Dubbed as the Global Surf Challenge, Earthwave is the first worldwide surfing event to be staged in one 24 hour period and is arguably the first sporting event to be run is this way.
This inaugural edition of Earthwave was inspired by the record breaking attempt on the Guinness World Record for the most surfers riding the same wave, in Cape Town, South Africa last September. After setting the unofficial record of 73 surfers riding the same wave last year, The Kahuna Surfing Academy, Cape Town has challenged surfers worldwide to break this record, with multiple global events taking place simultaneously on the same day.
Earthwave is not only about breaking records - the underlying purpose of the event is to mobilize the global surfing community in a quest for greater environmental awareness. With great synergy between the two, Earthwave has teamed up with the BLUE™ Climate and Oceans Project to highlight the growing problem of global climate change and the resulting impact on our world's oceans. Featured as a sporting event of the BLUE™ Climate and Oceans Project, Earthwave England 2007 will be covered on www.theblueproject.org with a joint call to action to corporations and individuals worldwide to become more active in caring for the health of our planet.
BLUE™ Ambassador, Conrad Humphreys comments: "It is fantastic that Earthwave England 2007 has agreed to team up with the BLUE™ Climate and Oceans Project to work together towards a common goal. For me personally, I have always loved the sea but I am more used to sailing on oceans than surfing on them. Nevertheless, this is a fantastic event with an important message and as it is taking place on my doorstep, I couldn't resist having a go.
"The South West has a fantastic and beautiful coastline and it is a real credit to the region that this global event has chosen Polzeath as its English venue. This will be a fun filled day of action and excitement that will highlight why our oceans are so important to our very well being, and if we are successful in setting a record, this will be the icing on the cake".
Earthwave England 2007 event organisers, Ticket to Ride and Surf's Up Boardriders Club are expecting over 300 surfers to attend this inaugural event in Polzeath next weekend. With intentions to continue this as an annual event, the project is expected to grow into the world's biggest annual mass celebration of the surfing lifestyle. All proceeds of England's event will be donated to the charity, Surfers Against Sewage"
