Surfers lined up
This inaugural edition of Earthwave was inspired by the record breaking attempt on the Guinness World Record for the most surfers riding the same wave in Cape Town, South Africa last September. After setting the unofficial record of 73 surfers riding the same wave last year, The Kahuna Surfing Academy, Cape Town has challenged surfers worldwide to break this record, with multiple global events taking place simultaneously on the same day.
Among the 120 surfers who attended England's Earthwave event in Polzeath yesterday was legendary comedian, Harry Enfield and Plymouth based ocean sailor and Ambassador of the BLUE™ Climate and Oceans Project, Conrad Humphreys. Conrad comments just before the attempt: "It is great to see so many people down here today despite the less than favorable conditions. The surf is quite small today which is going to make the attempt that much more difficult but everyone here is upbeat and focused on doing their best to bring the record to England".
After an hour of surfing and several attempts, officials checked back through the footage of the event and confirmed today that Earthwave England 2007 achieved a maximum of 31 surfers riding the same wave. Elsewhere, Santos in Brazil saw a mighty 84 surfers ride the same wave smashing the former record.
Conrad Humphreys continues: "Although Earthwave England 2007 sadly did not set a new world record, we all had a great time trying. The event however, did achieved its main goal to demonstrate the need for greater environmental awareness and by braving the cold waters off the South Coast of England yesterday, we did our bit to communicate a global call to action to corporations and individuals worldwide to be more caring of the health of our planet and at the end of the day, this is really all that matters".
Earthwave England 2007 event organisers, Ticket to Ride and Surf's Up Boardriders Club confirmed that £500 was raised through the event at Polzeath yesterday for the chosen charity, Surfers Against Sewage.
