After a weekend of bitter sporting disappointment, Britain finally has something to celebrate as BLUE™ Ambassador, Sara Campbell sets no less than three world records in the sport of Freediving, at the Triple Depth Competition in Egypt. On the opening day of the event, Sara (35) who made her debut on the competition circuit just six months ago, surprised everyone when she reached an amazing depth of 81 meters in Free Immersion, on just one single breath of air. Not only winning the discipline, Sara's dive knocked a meter off the previous record held by Russian, Natalia Molchanova.
Pulling down a measured line using only your arms, Free Immersion is just one of three disciplines that make up the Triple Depth competition and on day two, Sara was back to compete in Constant Weight, where the athlete must descend using a swim fin. As the audience and competitors watched on in disbelief, newcomer Sara achieved another recording breaking dive of 90 meters, adding an extra 2 meters to the previous record.
Yesterday, day three of the event saw the competitors take part in the final discipline, Constant Weight, No Fins where the athlete descends with no assistance of any kind. Living up to her new earned reputation as the competitor to look out for, Sara did not disappoint, achieving a massive 56 meter dive and a world record hat trick.
Setting three new world records in just 48 hours has never before been done but achieving this in less than 12 months of competing in a sport is totally unheard of. Sara Campbell has rescued British sport this weekend and is a inspiration to the world over.
From Dahab in Egypt where she now lives, an elated and overwhelmed Sara comments on her extraordinary achievement: "This weekend has been absolutely fabulous, for British sport, freediving, me personally and for the BLUE™Project. Since Nathalia Molchanova, former holder of my new World Records, stormed on to the scene, women's freediving has been a one-sided game. But in my first attempt at a World Record, I have not only been successful, but have done it three times over in just three days, something that has never been achieved in deep diving. I am the first woman in the world to achieve 90 metres, and it feels great."
Sara's role as a sporting ambassador for the BLUE™Climate and Oceans Project enables her to use participation in the sport of freediving to raise awareness of the shear beauty of the oceans and to encourage cleaner living. Sara continues: "Hopefully as the news spreads of my successes at the Triple Depth competition, people will see the imagery of the beautiful Red Sea and appreciate how precious our oceans are to our well being".
All eyes are now firmly on Sara who will be competing in the World Championships in Sharme el Sheikh from the 24 October to the 04 November. Updates on Sara's continued progress will be posted on the BLUE™ Project website at www.theblueproject.org.
