It is an event rarely seen in the sporting world of solo ocean sailing, the gathering of many of the great solo sailors from the past and present, who came together to celebrate the official launch of the 13th edition of the oldest solo race in history, now known as The Artemis Transat at Sutton Harbour, Plymouth.
Amongst the many sailing greats included BLUE Ambassadors, Conrad Humphreys who came 5th in The Transat 2004 and Sam Davies who will be competing in the race this year in her IMOCA Open 60 yacht called Roxy.
Dame Ellen MacArthur, who won the race in 2000 aged just 23 years and went onto finish 2nd in the solo Vendée Globe was also present, as was Val Howells, the only surviving competitor from the very first 1960 edition of the race.
Now, with just three months to go until the start of the 13th edition of the race, 22 competitors from across the globe have signed up to take part in what is one of the most demanding solo races in the world with another 10 skippers in the process of securing their entry.
