BLUE Pledges - Page 4

Introduction

Read the BLUE Pledges below:

"3 pledges I pledge to buy as little plastic packaged stuff as I possibly can and to dispose of any plastic in a responsible manner, preferably by recycling. I also pledge to only use environmentally friendly cleaning products remembering that everything that goes down my drain ends up in the environment so it is my responsibility to make sure it is safe to pull out that plug. I also also pledge to treasure the land, water and air and will encourage everyone I know and meet to do the same."

Claire Turner - Office Worker. Devon, UK

"I promise to buy only fish approved by the Marine Stewardship Council."

Daniel Gille - Student. SWEDEN

"I will neither use plastic shopping bags nor mylar balloons. I will pick up trash when ever I am out walking. I have eliminated all styrofoam cups at work and now have washable ceramic cups for all to use."

Chuck Julian - Businessman. Michigan, USA

"have quit bottles water, have a stainless steel cup for refills, use a green bag for the supermarket, recycle, and have a solar powered electric scooter for local travel."

Roger McGuin - Founder of the Singing Group, The Byrds. Florida, USA

"I pledge to continue my basic habits of conservation leaving the smallest carbon footprint possible in my trek through life."

James DeNio - Retired Academic. Texas, USA

"I already only use paper or reuseable grocery bags. I have a beautiful red Sigg water bottle so I don't need to use plastic and if I'm out and need a water and don't have my bottle with me I make sure it goes into the recycle box. I do not buy cases and cases of water. At my work in a hospital where not much is recycled I'm trying to figure out how to get more people to recycle their cans and bottles. Another thing that I'd like to see changed is when grocery stores package their meat they use cardboard trays instead of styrofoam. I'm just getting into writing some letters to the big chains about that. Another thing, at home, every scrap of paper without personal information goes into the recycle box."

Heather - Hospital Worker. CANADA

"I do hereby promise to: lessen my everyday consumption of water to the strict necessary, use phosphate free cleaning products, always carry an ecological bag with me in case, avoid buying individual wrappings, increase the "Fair Trade and Local Products\ part in my shopping list and talk to people about the importance of being a "Responsible Consumer" and lead them to the proper resources in order to do so.

Caroline Rosa - Executive Secretary. Quebec, CANADA

"Always carry my reusable water bottle so I don't have to buy or drink bottled water."

Greg Luffey - US Airforce Member. Texas, USA

"I pledge to stop using facial and body washes that have polyethylene (beads) listed as an ingredient, so that I don't pollute our waterways and oceans with tiny pieces of plastic. There is documented evidence that these little plastic beads cause problems in the ocean food chain. (see http://www.slate.com/id/2193693/ andhttp://www.bestlifeonline.com/cms/ publish/travelleisure/Our_oceans_are_turning_into_plastic_are_we.shtml) Currently, I spend about $60 a month on products that use polyethylene, and I plan on notifying these businesses that I will no longer be using their products unless they make a change better for our oceans, better for our future."

J Hooper - PWC & Library Volunteer. Texas, USA

"I pledge to end my use of plastic bags, water bottles and I pledge to help make the world aware of the dangers of polutants, especially plastic!"

Roger Finch - Webmaster. Texas, USA

"I am purchasing CamelBak Better Bottles for myself and my children to use instead of bottled water. In about 95% of circumstances, a reusable bottle is just as convenient, costs less, reduces pollution, and saves a bunch of energy. Just consider all the energy needed to create the plastic, ship the plastic to the bottler, form the bottle, create and ship cardboard for the packaging, and finally spend the energy and $$ to ship the weight of the bottles, the water, the cardboard, the pallets. Or maybe we could just open our taps and fill our own reusable bottles ? Inspired by Roz Savage - Row, Roz, Row!"

Brian Klees from California, USA

"I pledge to take 'baby steps' in the correct direction. The 1st is I have cut out drinking water out of plastic bottles. The second is we are buying as many fresh local vegetables as possible. We also joined a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) group (weekly vegetables). My goal is to keep on keeping on in the right direction (an drag my family around)."

Steve Medwetz - IT Manager. MN, USA

"Recyle, reuse shopping bags, conserve water, conserve energy."

Carol Terry - Caretaker. Oregan, USA

"I pledge to recycle and reuse. Shop with cloth bags. Take my own dishware to work. Always pick up trash. And don't just talk about my Blue Pledge, but to actually live my Blue Pledge."

Debbie Fitzgerald - X-Ray Digitizer. California, USA

"I pledge to buy more bulk food items to cut down on plastic containers. Also, I am using most of my non-recycle items to make lawn furniture."

Rochelle Poulson - Massage Therapist, Austin, USA

"I've already begun to talk personally with my area's State Representative, whom I've met personally on a number of occasions, about the use of plastic bags at a huge number of stores in this area. The worst offender here is Wal Mart. Our Representative actually works for them when he's not in session, so I feel if anyone could help make a difference here, it might be him. When I visit the local Wal Mart, I always carry my own bag in and out of the store. I refuse to use their plastic anymore. I've given them up 100%. Also, anytime I spot liter near an area lake or pond (we're landlocked here in Oklahoma) or just out in the wilderness, I'll pick it up and dispose of it in a proper way. Nothing irks me more than seeing the evidence of uncaring souls just tossing their junk anywhere they get the notion."

Kirk Allen - Cook, USA

"I am not going to use plastic bags for bulk foods at the grocery store - instead I will bring my own containers. I will ride my bike the 20 miles to work rather than drive my car, and use the light rail public transit line for part of my commute."

Laurel Harris - Urban Planner. Oregan USA

"To use less or no water when cleaning cars and aircraft and to use environmentally safe products."

Andy White - Small Business Owner. USA
