BLUE Pledges - Page 5

Introduction

Read the BLUE Pledges below:

I work hard at opening up people's minds to the waste they (we) generate. I try to make them understand there is no "magical someplace else". Everything we put out, comes back to us. The personal energy we send out, be it positive or negative comes back to us. The same goes for the pollutants we create (in the air all of nature breaths and the water all of nature drinks)

Steve - Environmental Consultant/Wildlife Biologist. OH, USA

"I'm a teacher in the public school system. I pledge to help my students to learn the facts about our environment and discover the power they have as individuals to keep our planet alive and well."

Tricia Roach - Teacher. AZ, USA

"I pledge to more mindfull about waste in all ways, and to continue my new habit of bringing a bag to the store, especially here in Paris where I pledge to say, in a horrified fashion \"Non, merci, pas de plastique\" as loudly as possible every time."

Deirdre Slevin - Retired Flight Attendant. CA, USA & Paris, FRANCE

"Stop buying coffee in plastic or styrofoam cups and start using a re-useable cup (WAWA coffee) and also buy a hybrid car (Toyota Prius hybrid or Honda Civic hybrid) to reduce emissions in the air and ozone and get better fuel economy. Today, I drive an SUV and also a pickup truck which really drink alot of gas!"

Dee Ann Metzger - Beach Lover. Denver, USA

"I pledge to live a "green life" and to teach my children and all of my Elementary students at Island Pacific Academy how to do the same. Living a "green life" means to me: Reducing my use of plastics and other bad items for the Earth in my daily life every chance I can , Recycling all things that my family uses that is concidered recyclable, Picking up trash at every park, beach, body of water or hiking trail and carrying the trash out to a proper container and Educating every child that I can about the world and all of it's beauty."

"I pledge to ride my bicycle the sixteen miles to work and back at least four out of five days a week, every week of the year. Also, I will bring reusable canvas bags to the grocery store and not take plastic bags. The plastic bags that I already have will be put to use and re-use."

Matthew Wietrick - Building Designer. California, USA

"I have begun to recycle everything I possibly can, from plastics and cans to cardboard, and I will continue to do this as long as I continue to find receptacles for recycling."

Ruth Stevens - Office Manager. Nebraska, USA

"We promise to consider boats and trains first, and only take plane rides as a last resort. We also promise to strongly consider a hybrid for our next vehicle. Current vehicles are low mpg(for the US)."

Kim Lawrence & Susan Trout - Massachusetts, USA

"I have already stopped using bottled water. I have turned off our R/O system and am using filtered water from a Brita jug. Have set up different bins in our kitchen so we are recycling a lot more of the items we throw away. Am much more aware of any negative impact of my family's and business's actions on the environment and trying to minimize or eliminate them."

I am working towards a goal of living sustainably in a location where I can eat locally and produce solar/wind energy. I want to start sailing and paddling on our oceans to gain a better appreciation of our oceanic world."

Adam Biesinger - Customer Service Supervisor. Alberta, Canada

"I've been wanting to make this pledge, but it took some thinking. There is no one pledge I could make to change the world. I've thought about what I could change to make my life more "friendly" to the environment, but realized, I've done a good bit in the past, and no one 'thing' could really change things. The changes I made were all small things, but now that I think about all of those changes, when its all put together, it does make a difference. My pledge is to share what I have changed in my life to make my existence more friendly to earth. I will name a few. If you're a smoker, consider quiting, but more important - do not throw your buds out the window of your car..or anywhere else. It's disgusting... and wrong. Keep a empty container in the car, when you're out and about, kill the thing, and then through it in a bin. When you go to the beach, take a plastic bag with you and make a point of it to pick up at least one peace of rubbish, and teach your children to do the same. They will soon see it as a game. Recycling is as easy as looking in your local directory for a recycling service - stop being so lazy. If you work in an office environment, encourage people to make less prints on paper. In our day and age, its become completely unnecessary to make a paper trail. Encourage people to think of processes which use less paper. If you're reading this, you most probably live in a first, or second world country. I live in a third world country (South Africa), and not even I need to drink bottled water. Tap water is fine people! Stop believing all the BS that gets forced down your throat by people trying to make some easy money from gullible people! Fill the kettle with only enough water with one drink. Don't leave lights on, unless you need it for security. Stop thinking "I pay tax, why should I worry" ...to name a few. Most importantly - try to make an effort of thinking about your actions, and how they affect your world. And lastly - watch www.therebedragonsmovie.com to stop wasting your money, when you're money could be better spent! Roz Savage, you're an inspiration to me. I only dream to put in the effort that you are."

Justin Coetzee - Stellenbosch, South Africa

"Take reusable bags to the supermarket and shops, and use less plastic cutlery at work - by keeping one set in my desk. I loved being out at sea and we saw lots of rubbish, even in our small horizon. It's a frightening indication of how much is actually out there."

Rachel Smith - Atlantic Rower (Atlantic Rowing Race 07/08). Cheshire, UK
