On August 24th 2008, Beijing will formally handover the Olympic Games to London, followed a few weeks later by the Paralympic Games.  The hand over will mark the start of the Cultural Olympiad, a four year celebration of sport and the arts leading up to the London Olympic Games in 2012.

The BLUE MILE is a mass participation event designed to bring together our coastal communities in the UK on a huge scale to celebrate our water environments.  Inspired by the need to leave a wide-spread environmental legacy from the Olympic and Paralympic Games, it is hoped that this event will be part of the cultural Olympiad towards 2012.

The BLUE Mile will become an annual event of national standing where, individuals, groups, clubs and indeed anyone will complete a BLUE Mile, on, in or next to a water environment.  It will enable people to highlight challenges and solutions in their own locality while overall raising the profile of our water environments on a national and international scale.
