Sport is intimately connected to nature and for some athletes it is the relationship with the environment that inspires and motivates them.  Living on an island gives us the opportunity to interact with our water environments and sport in its widest sense can be a gateway for so many people to interact with our great natural resources.

There have been several remarkable sportsmen and women that saw the potential of engaging people with the environment through sport.  Jacques Cousteau, the pioneering diver and Sir Peter Blake, arguable one of the world's greatest ocean racers, both saw its potential and as a consequence, generations have been inspired by their vision.

Jacques Cousteau said, "People protect what they love" and it is a love for the environment that we need to engender throughout our communities.  The challenge we face is no longer about raising awareness for environmental concerns.  We need to find the mechanisms that engage with people and I believe sport can be one of the mechanisms to do this.
